The Citadel of Besançon, designed by Vauban and a masterpiece
of the XVII century, is the premier tourist destination of the Franche-Comté.
This magnificently restored fortress houses several museums as well
as a large number of animal enclosures.

Unique and unexpected, the Museum of Besançon displays very
varied naturalized and living collections. It illustrates in an
original way, a way that is extremely unusual in France, the diversity
of life.

Zoological Garden
Discovering endangered species

Download
The educationally-oriented zoological garden places special
emphasis on the conservation of endangered animal species, particularly
big cats (Asian lions and Siberian tigers), primates (marmosets,
tamarins, lemurs, gibbons, colobus monkeys... more than 25 species)
and birds (around 30 aquatic and tropical species). Some 300
animals are evolving in spacious plant-enriched enclosures. |

A large number of
the species housed by the museum is part of a programme
to save endangered species in captivity. |
