Introduction

Discovering and understanding biodiversity
Besançon Natural History Museum houses a huge variety of animal species that perfectly illustrate the biodiversity of all the earth's continents. Nowhere else in France is it possible to see such a wide variety of animals in the same place!
The species are exhibited in five different areas: the Zoo (Jardin zoologique), Farm (Petite ferme), Insectarium, Aquarium, Noctarium. These areas are introduced by the "Naturalium", a space dedicated to biodiversity. Their purpose is not only to entertain visitors to the Citadel, these collections also fulfil three important objectives of the Natural History Museum: conservation of endangered animal species, research and education.
